Le route du bonheur

A bit of history

Halfway through the1950’s the so-called Train Bleu regularly departed Paris’s Gare de Lyon station, taking passengers along the route connecting the city of lights with the Côte d’Azure.

Along the Paris, Lyon and Marseilles corridor  a few new outposts dedicated to fine French taste and flavour were beginning to emerge. Being the proprietors of one of these establishments, Marcel and Nelly Tilloy saw an opportunity to unite other like-minded properties who shared their untiring passion for hospitality and fine cuisine.

The Tilloys were thus able to create and offer an inviting gastronomic route which would encourage travellers to explore the areas around the eight railway stations, suggesting welcoming country inns, temples to good taste and fine cooking.

It was not long before this exclusive journey from north to south took on a new name “La Route du Bonheur” or “The Road to Happiness”. Relais & Chateaux currently has 142 Routes du Bonheur.

The tradition continues to thrive and Villa Cordevigo is today on the Route du Bonheur itinerary called Between Trieste & The Dolomites, landscapes in Northern Italy.
